Benzonia Public Library Library Showcase: As illustrated in previous showcases, library size does not affect the quality of services that libraries provide to their communities. Benzonia Public Library is definitely small (there is only one stop light in the whole county of Benzie) but they also have a history of providing excellent service. Recently retired Roxane Miner contributed to the library in many ways. She was responsible for: adding more open hours (they are now open on Monday); automating the library; refurbishing the children’s room and the Catton Room (Room named for a local author); and for making technology available by providing public access computers, DSL connection and wireless connection. The new Director, Marjorie Porter, who started in March of this year, is continuing the work that Roxanne started. Marjorie came from another small library, Franklin Public Library, which is located in the southern part of the state. Next month, the Library will begin their Summer Reading Program in collaboration with other Benzie County libraries. Registered children who complete the program will be awarded a coupon book redeemable for items from local businesses. Josh White, children’s songwriter/entertainer is planned to perform on June 24th. The library building has a rich history. Built in 1909 and used as a dormitory for the former Benzonia College/Academy, the Mills Community House not only houses the public library, but also offers a community meeting room. In addition, plans are progressing for converting the top floor of the building into a community theatre. Although the college is no longer in existence, the Mills Community House and the Benzonia Public Library continue to educate and enlighten everyday. We salute Benzonia Public Library for all they have done for their community and are proud to have them as a member of the Mid-Michigan Library League.
