Cadillac-Wexford County Public Library Library Showcase: “To boldly go where no library has gone before.” Is an adaptation of the well known Star Trek phrase which adequately fits the Cadillac-Wexford County Library. Under the leadership of Co-Directors, Cathy Tacoma and Kathy Petoskey (“the C(K)athys”) the Library has explored new ways of doing things and embraced new technology. The Cadillac-Wexford Public Library was the 2005 recipient of the Loleta D. Fyan Grant award for a proposal titled “MP3 @ the Library.” This award is presented annually to one library in the United States. The Cadillac-Wexford Public Library now has access to 741 MP3 titles, with 30 titles added per month, equaling 360 new titles annually. The library is one of only a few MP3 library book collections in Michigan. As part of the grant, the Library also purchased and checks out MP3 players. “To seek out new life” is another Star Trek quote that applies to the library. Starting on May 17, kids had the opportunity to monitor the magic of metamorphosis. The Cadillac-Wexford Public Library Friends of the Library sponsored a “Butterfly Ball” which featured a story time about butterflies in which there was an opportunity to make butterfly masks and children received free painted lady caterpillars. The library kept a few of the caterpillars so that children could watch the metamorphosis process when they visited. Existing life at the library may be getting a new home. The Library has recently applied for community funds from the new Wal-mart Superstore in Cadillac for an aquarium to beautify their Children’s Room. Drawing upon the natural beauty of fish, a new aquarium will enhance surroundings, enthrall children and relate to the lovely lake that borders the Library. It will replace a much-loved, defunct aquarium which captivated children for years and allow the fish to finally return “from vacation” in the small fish bowl. While exploring new frontiers, the library also learns from the exploration of others. Their children’s librarian, Pat Snider, celebrates her 50 th anniversary with the Library this year, which may be a record in Michigan. Pat is beloved to the children and the community of Cadillac. Check out some of the other explorations of the Cadillac-Wexford County Public Library at their website: http://www.cadillaclibrary.org/ We salute Cadillac-Wexford County Public Library for all they have done for their community and are proud to have them as a member of the Mid-Michigan Library League.
