They have wood book shelves! When the Central Lake District Library built their new building in 1998 they had enough money to buy wood book shelves, automate the library, and purchase 7 public access computers. This phenomenal feat was made possible through grants and fundraising. Being awarded a $350,000 LSCA grant for the building helped them reach a total of $800,000 for their building project. Their building has 5,300 square feet and has a community activity room. The building is not only a great community achievement, but a great community asset.

Before their exciting upgrade to the new building, they were housed in an old-store front building for 50 years. The storefront was cold in the winter and hot in the summer and provided little space.

Several of our member libraries were started by women’s groups. Central Lake is slightly different in that they were started by women, but it was the community Garden Club which established the library in 1945.

Recently, the library purchased the house that is next door to their building. They were able to purchase the house with funds from an endowment. Their Friends of the Library are planning on utilizing the building to hold Used Books Sales a couple of times a week. In the future, the house may be torn down if the library needs to expand.

The Director, Christine Bachman, takes pride in the library’s ability to provide personalized service to their patrons. The staff is friendly and enthusiastic about the library and it’s achievements.

We salute Central Lake District Library for all they have done for their community and are proud to have them as a member of the Mid-Michigan Library League.
