Evart Public Library

Library Showcase:

When patrons visit the Evart Public Library, they get a two-for-one deal. They visit a library and a museum.

In 2003 the library renovated the building that was adjacent to theirs. The renovation connected the two building and do`ubled the size of the library and a museum was added. This is the third time that the Evart Public Library has made renovations to their building. Now, their only options left for expansion is either the sky or below ground. Their current location is ideal; they are in the center of downtown Evart in a very visible location.

The museum displays artifacts, has an extensive Michigan history section, and a well-used Genealogy section. Some artifacts are located in the former bank vault, which is evidence of the building’s original use as bank. The Michigan history section contains several displays and books on our state’s history. The Genealogy section is visited by people from all around the state. The section has a computer dedicated to Genealogy research. The museum curator, Aloha Hodges is available to assist patrons with their searches. Aloha Hodges is a retired library board member who deserves the credit for establishing and maintaining such a wonderful museum, according to library Director Lilas VanScoyc.

Recently, the library added 4 additional public access computers to their collection, which now gives them a total of 5. The total does not include the Genealogy computer.

The library converted to Verso this past year along with several other libraries in our cooperative.

The library’s summer reading program is underway and they are using the Dragons, Dreams, and Daring Deeds theme.

Lilas is very enthusiastic about the library. They have a good book budget and her board is good to work with. She would like it stated that they have received a lot of help over the years from MMLL and they appreciate it.

We salute Evart Public for all they have done for their community and are proud to have them as a member of the Mid-Michigan Library League.
