Gay Anderson, a.k.a. Marian the Librarian, is the Director of the Class I Library that is located in Alden. The library is located inside the community center building which is a converted elementary school. Being part of the building allows them to utilize a kitchen and gym for library events. Helena Township Library has an active friends group and a monthly newsletter. The newsletter features an “advice” column that is answered by Marian the Librarian. Marian is community figure that participates in parades and is the stereotypical “old-fashioned” Librarian.

Is it true? A most reliable source just informed me that Maria Callas will be performing right here in Alden this spring. I would very much like to do a duet with her. Please advise me as to when we can meet and schedule rehearsals.

Dear Fredricka,

The premiere of the film, Callas Forever, will be shown right here in our little community on Sunday, April 17th, but Maria is unable to attend the soiree since she has been dead for 25 years. Still, it is quite a coup for a small community such as ours to be the first in the area to show this film! This fortuitous event comes about because we have an “in” through someone who worked on the film.

 I’m also sorry to inform you that anyone who attempts to sing along during the operatic arias will be escorted posthaste to the door and severely reprimanded out in the parking lot in a humiliating and painful fashion. We can only hope you are not into that sort of thing! Please purchase your ticket just like anyone else by going to the library or contacting a member of Friends.

Tickets for the film mentioned above may be obtained by calling the Library. The premiere is also a wine and cheese reception.

In addition to an active FOL group, they provide an array of services to their community including programming, four public computers, a collection size of 18,000, and a website http://www.aldenlib.info/ (they are currently in the process of putting their collection on the internet). They are also in the process of doing a needs assessment survey and are completing a library inventory. We salute Helena Township for all they have done for their community and are proud to have them as a member of the Mid-Michigan Library League.
