Pentwater Township Library Library Showcase: Dear Santa: Santa I have been really good this year. Mom only had to ask me twice each week to clean my room. I have been nice to sister, except for when she isn’t nice to me. This year for Christmas I want my own library. Libraries are great. They let you take out books, people read you stories, and they have computers that you can play on. You can deliver my library to my backyard. I know that it will not fit into my living room. I would also like a new bike. Tommy p.s. I live in Pentwater, MI. Just in case you didn’t know. Dear Tommy: I have checked and you are certainly on my good list. You already have the present that you have asked for, although it is not in your backyard. There is a library in Pentwater, the Pentwater Township Library. The library building is just 10 years old and has many features that you will like. Their children’s room is decorated just for children to enjoy. Hundreds of children’s books line the shelves and each Tuesday they read books during their story time. During the school year, your class is always welcome to come to the library. In the summer, I know that Pentwater can be very busy because of all of the visitors and the summer residents coming back, so when you need to relax, go the library. They have a Summer Reading Program where you can earn prizes for reading. Tell the teenagers you know about their Summer Reading Program for teens; for every 200 pages that they read, they receive a gift certificate from a business in your town. If your mom and dad love to read books, then they can join one of the two book discussion clubs that the library has. The groups meet one time per month. The library also has a big collection of books, newspapers, magazines, videos, and books on tape and CD. The library has computers on which you can access the internet. Or if your family has a laptop computer, they can bring it and access the internet by using the library’s wireless connection. They have children’s computers where you can play games or type letters and school reports. To help the library raise money, they have a group called the Friends of the Library. It is a group of volunteers who have an annual book sale, flower sale, and silent auction. You could help the F.O.L group by asking stores to donate give certificates and items for their silent action. Their last silent auction raised $4,500. Each spring the group has a flower sale which involves selling vouchers for flowers at a local greenhouse. The library then receives 25% of the profit from the vouchers. An annual book sale is another way that the group earns money. The money that is earned is used to have programs at the library. Three times per year authors and speakers present at the library. The programs are often planned along with other organizations in your community such as the historical society and Audubon society. This makes sure that the whole community knows about the event. Because so many people enjoy the library in your town, they will be expanding in the future. The Breton Group helped them do a needs assessment a couple of years ago and they determined that because of the number of people that use the library their building needs to be larger. One of the things that I personally love about the library is that each December, they have an Annual Open house. The library serves delicious homemade cookies and people talk and are merry. That day just like every other day, the library serves coffee. You can ask for water, when you are thirsty. Libraries are great and I can see why you asked for one. The Pentwater Township library in your town is a present that was already given to the entire community. Go visit the library; it has everything that you asked for. Merry Christmas, Santa P.S. I will see what I can do about the bike. We salute the Pentwater Township Library for all they have done for their community and are proud to have them as a member of the Mid-Michigan Library League.
