Surrey Township Public Library Library Showcase: The entire structure of the Surrey Township Public Library is built around helping patrons develop healthy life skills, which includes reading. The design of their building, their programs, and their staff all reflect the fact that Reading is Fundamental. The very youngest of patrons have a room dedicated to encouraging them to love books. The “Marilyn room” which is named for a retired library trustee “Marilyn”, who has cancer provides many resources for pre-readers. The room has books, crafts, toys, and even a glider rocker. There is a television with cable that is available. Between the lions http://pbskids.org/lions/ is a commonly viewed show by those learning to read at the library. The library also has the Teen Room which includes a media center with laptops; games, books, and other resources. A Teen Council meets in the room twice a month. The Teen Council has sponsored a poetry contest and a ghost hunt. The Teen Room and the Marilyn room were opened two years ago and were made possible by a grant from the Dow Corporation. The Director, Jane Eisenhauer, has been the Director of the library for 25 years. Under her leadership, the library expanded by adding two wings. The wings were added 10 years apart. The second wing has a basement which is home to their cataloging, administrative office, and a staff kitchen. In total, their building is 14,000 square feet. The building is centrally located and is 1 block from the downtown, high school, and post office. Tours of the building are provided for both home schooling groups and school classes. Many of the library’s patrons are “snowbirds” and therefore offer many helpful suggestions as to how other libraries provide services. The library is on the eastern edge of MMLL’s geographical territory and they serve patrons from both rural and urban areas. The staff of 5 each has a specialty that enhances the service the library provides which ranges from working with the teen group, cataloging, reference service, and circulation. During the summer months, the library provides many programs to attract people to the library. Three reading programs are offered for children and teens. An adult reading program is also sponsored. The library also supports a book club year around. We salute Surrey Township Public Library for all they have done for their community and are proud to have them as a member of the Mid-Michigan Library League.
