White Pine Library Library Showcase: Library Showcase: White Pine Library Interview between the Mid-Michigan Library League and the White Pine Library located in Stanton, Michigan. I, MMLL, have the pleasure of having 47 member libraries. A few days ago I had the opportunity of sitting down with a Class III member, the White Pine Library. MMLL: “I am familiar with a few of your attributes. Can you tell me more about yourself?” White Pine Library (WPL): “I live in Stanton Michigan which is in Montcalm County. Stanton is the county seat of the county.” MMLL: “You are in the southern part of my geographical coverage area. WPL: “My number one service is customer service. With a staff group of six who are led by Katie Arwood I make sure that all the patrons are greeted with a smile and are assisted in finding what they are searching for. I have a huge supply of books available, over twenty thousand, for those who are looking for recreational reading or are doing research. I also have books on CD and offer DVDs to loan. All materials are available free of charge. Up to date technology is a high priority and last year new computers and software were purchased for patrons and staff. The computers are a huge hit and I hope to be able to add computers with the Gates Foundation donation this year.” MMLL: “Your staff seems to be of great importance.” WPL: “The staff here is very efficient and they keep me running smoothly. I can always count on them to complete any tasks that I ask them to do. The group enjoys the work they do and it shows in the way that they interact with patrons. The atmosphere is cheery and welcoming. “ MMLL: “What is a recent project that you have been working on?” WPL: “In 2001 I went through an expansion and renovation project. The $175,000 for the project was raised entirely by private donations, which I was elated about. It made me even prouder to be in this community where we have such great support (we are located in the city of Stanton but also serve Sheridan and Sidney and the surrounding countryside). Along with adding more space, the entrance way to the library was covered and a staff restroom was built, which they appreciate.” MMLL: “What do you feel makes you unique?” WPL: “Well, as I mentioned earlier, the staff is exceptional, and I think that is wonderful. I also think that our community is a tremendous asset. In order to keep the history of the area alive we have an extensive genealogy area. Included in our collection we have 5 photo albums full of pictures. Some patrons come in just to see the pictures.” MMLL: What are some of your goals for your future? WPL: I have begun to think about a mileage renewal. It expires in a couple of years. I would also like to continue on the path that we are on now, increasing circulation and reaching out to our community. MMLL: Thank you, White Pine Library, for taking the time to talk with me. I salute you for all that you have done for your community and am proud to have you as a member.
